Interesting Website Stats

We’ve just launched a new website Central FM so I thought I’d do a little research after the first couple of days.
Stats are only for anonymous users (Visitors). All figures are taken from Google Analytics.

Number of page hits = 1952

Average number of pages each visitor views  = 5.7

Average time on site for each visitor = 6.01 minutes

Top viewed page (excluding the home page) =   community notice board

53% of visitors came through search engines (ie Google)

Here’s some stuff that really surprised me.

Browsers that visitors used to view the site

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer = 51% (Internationally it is 54%)
  • Google Chrome = 23%
  • Firefox = 18%
  • Safari = 7%
  • Others = 1%

Looking at Microsoft IE versions

  • IE8 = 66%
  • IE7 = 15%
  • IE9 = 15% (Can only be used on Vista or Windows 7)
  • IE6 = 4% (IE6 Internationally is 10%.  It’s also used as a guide to the quality of home computing.  BTW it sucks and causes us web developers more problems than anything else)

What does this mean in English.

Simply put Central Hawke’s Bay is NOT backwards. In fact we’re ahead of the international community in terms of home computer technology.

From a personal point of view Microsoft Internet Browser are bad news – they are the single cause of holding back web technology. We’d love to build website in HTML5 but they will not work in IE8 and below (Limited in IE 9).

Moving on:

Computer operating systems that viewed the website.

Hardly surprising top spot goes to Microsoft however they percentage might surprise you – only 73% with Apple Mac coming second on 19% (a few years ago that would have been 5% !!!!).  We have some Linux users out there with 6% and we are also getting some views from people with iPads 1% the rest are iPhones .

Microsoft platforms XP – 58%, Windows 7 – 27%, vista – 14 % the rest is made up of Server 2003 and other MS platforms.  Server 2003 means that we have some techies out they viewing the site from work.  Interesting that 41% of Microsoft users have upgrade from XP.

The operating systems also explains the lower use of Internet Explorer, as it is only available on Microsoft Windows but Chrome, Firefox etc are available on all platforms and I believe safari is the default for iPhone.

More proof that CHB is not backwards – monitor resolution:

Not one person has viewed the website with a monitor resolution of 800×600 (those old ugly CRT’s) avg has been 1024 x 768 (which is why the site is set at 1020) largest screens 2048 and 1920 (That will probably be the mac users) smallest 1024 x 600 (I think that maybe laptops)

Mobile devices – iPad and iPhone no smart phones yet.

Networks

Winner Telecom but close behind them Orcon, woosh, baycity and iHug
